Today’s Walk: the Jury is Still Out

Happy belated Easter.

I have a dilemma that I ponder. Is it better to “get your steps in” before or after breakfast? Are there health benefits that out-weigh one or the other? I’ve read arguments for both. I have done both and am not sure there is much difference in the accumulative affects. What do you think?

For me, a couple of factors determine my success in being consistent and completing regular power walks. To start with, it depends on how quickly I am willing to roll out of bed. If I stay in bed and pick up my phone to check email and social media I can easily lose track of time. As I confessed in previous posts, I cherish solitude which has a time limit. If I get out the door too late in the morning I risk compromising my experience. If I go first thing I know my chances increase to enjoy the morning quiet. It also ensures that I’ll get it done. If I linger over my morning tea (which is my preferred ritual), eat breakfast and wait to get out, the delay can cost me my enthusiasm making it easy to create excuses not to go. I also have an eager walking buddy. Baxter waits for signs that I’m awake before pouncing on me to coax me to get up and get going. If it’s a day I chose not to walk, boy that wagging tail stops and drops quickly. Talk about a guilt trip!

This morning Baxter and I took our walk before breakfast. As we began our walk, the smell of fresh baked cinnamon rolls filled the air. Little did my neighbors know they created a scenario for torture. It smelled so GREAT! Especially on an empty stomach. I rarely make and/or eat cinnamon rolls because of their glucose boosting power. But, who doesn’t love a hot cinnamon roll? The smell takes me back to my childhood and our school lunch ladies. One of my strongest memories from grade school is that one day each week where they would fill the halls of our school with the smell of freshly baked cinnamon rolls. It’s one of my fondest school memories. I think many of us have this one in common.

Back to my original question. Do you notice a difference in your results if you workout before or after breakfast? #iluvtowalk #walkingmakesmehappy #baxteronthego
