It’s funny how a little thing like changing direction can also change one’s perspective. This morning Baxter and I walked up the headland to find that the city had reversed course now asking trail users to go counter clockwise. Initially (due to Covid-19) we were instructed to go clockwise which is my preference. I’m not sure what inspired the change but being civic minded we complied.
What you must understand is that this part of our walk climbs in elevation from sea level up to 700 feet and then back down to sea level. The trail is a loop so you go up, around the headland and back down. One side has an urban feel where you walk on pavement and then gravel footing before getting to the dirt trail. You see views of the city and pier with fishing activity followed by a coastal forest environment with ocean views. The latter is my favorite part of the trail.
Going the opposite direction felt weird but at the same time made today’s walk feel like a new experience. The landscape looked and felt different. On the plus side, I noticed plants I had not seen before. The trail looked very different to me. But, it also felt like an easier workout. For some reason less challenging than going the other direction (a negative). To me, getting the urban part over first makes the forested part of the trail feel like a reward. I feel more relaxed in the forest and the natural beauty is spectacular. A great way to finish a walk on the headland.
We will see what the coming week brings. Maybe we will change course again. Or maybe Baxter and I need to change our route. #iluvtowalk #walkingmakesmehappy #baxteronthego
