Memorial Day May 25, 2020
Baxter and I had a lovely walk around the headland this morning. It’s was a beautiful start to the day that was quiet, still and warm. Halfway around the headland I took my windbreaker off, this is T-shirt weather, which is always a blessing. As the day picks up, (yes there are tourists in town) we will spend the rest of the day in our backyard garden.
Today is Memorial Day which is a broadly interpreted holiday. Originally the intent was to honor those who gave their lives in the line of service. In our little coastal fishing town they also honor those who lost their lives at sea and those who chose to be buried at sea. To many people it is also the signal that summer is on its way. I suspect our local beach will be busy today. On my way home from the trail I could see the traffic in town had already picked up; I was stopped and asked about local facilities. Sigh…
Living in a coastal town there is one branch of service in particular that stands out on a regular basis. Please do not forget to honor the men & women who serve in the United States Coast Guard (USCG). Whether they help fishermen or fisherwomen in trouble, patrol the seas for illegal activity, do additional community service, or help tourists who strand themselves, they are a very important part of the community. Their impacts on public safety and coastal communities in particular is tremendous. We are grateful they are here. #iluvtowalk #walkingmakesmehappy #baxteronthego #USCG
