Today’s Walk: Body Mechanics

Tuesday June 9, 2020

Never in my life had I thought a phrase like body mechanics would become so important to me. Our bodies have memory and mine is sensitive to the damage I’ve done to it in the past. From just landing wrong to horse related injuries to misstepping in holes created by our former beloved beagle, I have twisted my ankle more times than I like to remember.

Because of sheltering in place I’ve been dressing daily on the casual side. That includes wearing flip flops (that have some arch support) instead of shoes with structure. I know better. The unstructured shoe over time causes my ankle to roll. This past week my ankle silently rebelled sending me a message via my knee. So Baxter and I took a couple of days off to give it a rest. This morning we walked an alternative trail, the Hammond Trail, to ease back into it. After all, staying mobile is the name of the game!

Today’s walk was longer than usual (RT 4.2 miles) but not as challenging. Unlike Trinidad Head (RT 2.6 miles) the Hammond trail is mostly flat with only two inclines, each on different parts of this 5.5 mile long community trail (RT 11 miles). The two graphs below show the difference between the two walks.

Baxter and I took the northern end of the trail in the hopes of spotting some harbor seals. A change of scenery was actually nice to have and today we enjoyed the smells of sweet peas in bloom. We were also able to observe a group of (what I think were male) harbor seals at their haul out site. Mission accomplished and pain free! #iluvtowalk #walkingmakesmehappy #baxteronthego
