Gardening Contributes to Good Health

Thursday June 18, 2020

Instead of walking the headland today I opted to do some much needed work in our backyard garden. My maternal grandmother used to say that if you needed to work something out, dig in the dirt. Well it turns out grandma was right!

My daily walks meet my workout needs both mentally and physically. Pulling weeds and digging in the dirt does the same. It’s a great way to re-ground yourself while creating a beautiful space and getting some exercise. Studies have shown that grandma’s wisdom was based on more than wives tales. For years I’ve followed the work of Idaho entrepreneur Mary Jane Butters. I love her publications/products and believe her to be a marketing genius. If your not familiar with her, Google her; she is amazing.

In Butter’s magazine entitled, Mary Jane’s Farm, Dr. Laura Koniver writes an interesting column that focuses on ways to stay healthy. One of Koniver’s recommendations is to keep yourself grounded. She has a new book out entitled, The Earth Prescription, that I’ve recently purchased and added to my reading pile. The thinking is that by touching the earth with your bare hands or feet you can lower your stress level & blood pressure, ease depression and increase happiness. Given the state of global events (Covid-19, racism, politics, economics, foreign relations…need I go on?) I suspect all of us are in need of at least one of these benefits. Give it a try. What have you got to lose? #iluvtowalk #walkingmakesmehappy #maryjanebutters #theearthprescription #wisdom
