Today’s Walk: Native Blooms

Friday June 19, 2020

Baxter and I got out this morning “on time” resulting in a glorious walk by ourselves on Trinidad Head. We don’t have actual assigned time slots but the other fur baby owners also seem to be keeping a self prescribed schedule which paces us all apart. This routine makes for a much more enjoyable walk, especially for those seeking solitude in addition to exercise.

Fitness Centers are still closed in our area. Today I watched a couple do a workout routine on the beach (see pic below). It’s a great idea (can’t beat the view) and was fun to watch from above. We all gotta do what we gotta do.

I’m always on the hunt for native plants in bloom, and this morning we found some California Paintbrush in addition to Tiger Lily and Douglas Iris. The intensity of the red in the California Paintbrush is what caught my eye. It’s a small, low to the ground plant that could be easily missed by the casual observer. It’s also blooming along the cliff, away from the main trail, so most people will probably not spot it. Berries are also coming into their own; lots of thimbleberry (otherwise known as flowering raspberry) on the head.

Pat yourself on the back—we made it thru another week. Our rural county now has 110 confirmed Covid-19 cases. We seem to teeter back and forth between days with no cases and then a day with one or two more confirmed. Two steps forward, one step backward. Sigh….
