My quest for solitude and a change of scenery required a 1 hour drive north to reach the remote Lyons Ranch Trail off of Bald Hills Road in Redwood National and State Parks. The Bald Hills contain rolling hills, beautiful prairies and oak woodlands; spectacular vistas that would thrill any photographer. The area is known for its spring wildflowers. It is also definitely bear country. The drive is absolutely gorgeous and should be on your bucket list.
The area originally was part of the ancestral homelands for the Chilula, Hupa and Yurok people. Before the site became part of the National Park, it was a century long family ranch of Jonathan and Amelia Lyons (Hupa) who along with their descendants operated four ranches that stretched a ten mile area in the Bald Hills.
The walk is a 4 mile round trip hike on a former gravel road. There are connecting trails for a longer walk. Dogs are not allowed. My friend Rose and I took this hike together. To our great satisfaction we had the trail to ourselves for 3/4 of the time. I got some great pics today that are featured below. Warning: the images may take a few moments to load. #iluvtowalk #walkingmakesmehappy #lyonsranchtrail
