Today’s Walk: Happy Labor Day Weekend & Do You Know Our History?

Baxter and I had a quiet morning on the headland. Signs of Fall are all around. Sigh…I’m personally going to hold out thru Sept 22; hanging onto every ounce of summer. We have high temps forecast for the holiday weekend which usually translates into large numbers of folks seeking refuge on the coast….

This weekend is Labor Day Weekend. It’s a great time to pause and remember whose responsible for getting workers benefits like holiday pay and a 5 day work week. Knowing the country’s history is important. Especially when there is so much political discussion about a living wage and equal pay. My first real job, aside from babysitting/paper route/berry picking was a union job. Yep, I’m a withdrawal card carrying member of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union. Retail employment in high school and college is what helped make my college education possible. Because I worked for a union shop, I got better pay than many others who worked for our non-union competitors. I have not forgotten.

I wonder how many really know our labor history. I suspect many don’t. When I was the Executive Director at the Clark County Historical Museum, Vancouver, WA, working in partnership with labor organizations we created an exhibit and public program series (2013) about the community’s labor history. Parts of that exhibit were digitized and can be found on the museum’s website, under the Past Exhibits tab, located at cchmuseum.org. Happy Labor Day. #iluvtowalk #baxteronthego #laborhistory #cchm
