One of my favorite hikes is Trillium Falls Trail inside Redwood National and State Parks, just north of Orick, California. What’s unusual about this location is that it’s a reclaimed mill site. If you ignored the interpretive panels you would never guess that 40 years ago this beautiful location was home to a commercial logging operation for the Arcata Redwood Company. The mill stopped operating in 1970. The property sat vacant for 20+ years after which the National Park Service came in and reclaimed the site, incorporating it into the nearby park system.
Trillium Falls Trail is a 2.5 mile loop thru a forest that includes a small waterfall (its name sake) and an impressive stand of old growth redwoods. It’s also home to quite a few native trillium plants that depending on location, can bloom February – June. On today’s walk my friend Sara and I came across a variety of mushrooms sprouting up along the trail. Even though the climate has been dry, the fungus season has begun.
This is a moderate level trail that has a parking lot and restrooms. The Roosevelt Elk herds also frequent the area surrounding the trail. Enjoy today’s pics! #iluvtowalk #trilliumfalls #humboldt #redwoodnationalandstateparks
