Today’s Walk: Navigating the Landscape

Every location has its charms and whether or not we realize it, we are all very tied to the landscapes we live in. A number of elements from within that landscape influence our behavior and our happiness. The people or plants and animals who live there, the architecture and history of the human designed environment, and the natural features and resources play a role in defining our daily experience. Sometimes in a subtle way and other times not so subtle.

One of my favorite sounds when walking on the headland is the clanking of the buoys. I find them comforting. Especially when walking a loop around a headland that is encased by them. Buoys have an important job in helping fisher-people navigate. But they also set the margins for the rest of us. Maybe I’m a romantic or I’ve seen too many movies, but I really do feel a sense of order and peace when I hear the rhythmic sounds coming from the buoys.
