Today’s Walk: Taking Advantage of Opportunities

I found myself spending an extra day in the city by the Bay so this morning’s walk was again on Crissy Field. Yesterday I wished I had more time (be careful what you wish for) so putting our departure delay aside, I welcomed the opportunity to spend more time on this awesome walking path.

My lead photo is up close and personal with a Great Blue Heron who hung out next to my trail. Herons are among my favorite birds so this was a more than welcome event. I swear he/she looked me right in the eye. Very cool!

Crissy Field resides on land that the Ohlone people used for collecting fish and shellfish. This salt marsh and estuary became a US Army Airfield that operated until 1974. The National Park Service assumed control of the site in 1994. One would never guess that this location was home to a former Army hazardous waste dump. Along the walking path the public has access to the beach and beautiful views of the Golden Gate Bridge, the city of San Francisco, and Alcatraz. The public can walk, jog and bicycle along the trail. Fort Point is at the west end of the trail just below the Golden Gate Bridge. The old Fort remains have been preserved and under normal conditions are open to the public. Because of the surf break, the site has been a draw for generations of surfers.

Enjoy my pics! #iluvtowalk #crissyfield #sanfrancisco #goldengatebridge
