Today’s Walk: the Unpredictable Coast

Summer is on the horizon. The last two days of fickle weather have illustrated an important point; if your planning a trip to the coast make sure you dress in layers. When the temperature is what inlanders perceive as chilly, if there’s no wind and it’s sunny, 50 degrees can be warm T-shirt weather. If the wind is up, it can be chilly. It just depends on how close the off-shore marine layer sits and whether it moves inland. The marine layer dictates our weather and humidity level. Humidity makes the temperature feel warmer (if there is no wind). This is typical west coast weather.

Locally our daily weather can vary up and down the coast. It can be sunny in Trinidad and foggy or overcast in Eureka just 20 miles south. The reverse can also be true. Layering your clothing is your best defense. On yesterday’s walk, I wore a sweatshirt under a windbreaker. The same time this morning I wore a short sleeve T-shirt under a lightweight cotton hoodie with no windbreaker. It can varies daily and throughout the day.

Plan ahead and pack well. (Zip-pants are a genius invention.) Your trip to the coast will be more fun if your prepared. Enjoy my pics! My images illustrate the contrast between the last two mornings. #iluvtowalk #trinidadcalifornia #humboldt #humboldtcounty
