Baxter and I had a really nice mellow walk this morning. Overcast skies seem to slow people down in the morning; we walked in isolation most of the way. Maybe this was payback for the awful experience we had two days previous.
Two days ago Baxter and I took our usual route around the headland and then spent time beach combing on Launcher Beach. A blissful morning until, our return home up Edwards Street. As we began the uphill walk we were spotted by a large loose dog. The family member responsible for the dog had been in their garage, which faces the street, garage door open, dog loose nearby. This dog’s back was about 3 feet tall. A big guy. A seemingly friendly, playful guy.
I honestly think the dog meant no harm. He just wanted a playmate. But Baxter is not only my walking buddy, he is my guard dog. An unknown loose dog barking and running towards us sent him into defense mode. The dog ran after us as we walked uphill. He circled us and repeatedly jumped up, lunging at Baxter all the while we walked up hill. His owner unsuccessfully tried calling him. The dog was loose and enjoying his freedom. Five cars slowed and then stopped to avoid hitting the dog who by this time was zigzagging up the street trying to avoid capture by his owner. As he continued to harass us, Baxter dug his toenails into my side, thrashed from side to side, and barked back. I carried him up the hill trying to discourage the other dog from continuing. Another dog walker appeared on the scene which caused the wild one to loose interest in us. After about 15 minutes the owner finally gained control of her dog and headed downhill as we walked home.
Like many cities, Trinidad has a leash law. We also have residents and visitors who frequently disregard the law and state, “my dog is friendly.” Fortunately we did not have to put this one to a complete test. I was able to hang onto Baxter while twisting and turning away from the rowdy dog. It could have been much worse if I had lost control of Baxter. If I was a person who had a fear of dogs, it would have been incredibly traumatic. This kind of situation can be avoided if dogs are controlled and on leash, not allowed to roam free. Dogs can be unpredictable and easily distracted. Please think about the well being of yourself, your dog, AND other people and their dogs.
