Today’s Walk: A Minus Tide is Good for the Soul

This morning we had a -.41 tide so instead of walking the headland I ventured out without Baxter to take advantage of the opportunity. Minus tides are the best way to experience the beach and all its invertebrate glory.

Our area is showing very strong signs of sea star recovery. Pisasters which are the most common sea stars in our region are now EVERYWHERE in the intertidal on Trinidad State Beach. It’s very exciting to see this amazing rebound. Take a look at the National Park service’s website at https://www.nps.gov/im/swan/ssws.htm to learn more about the sea star wasting disease that was documented here in the spring of 2013. It wasn’t until 2016 that they appeared to start their comeback.

If you don’t already have a favorite app on your phone to follow the tides, I recommend TideTrac. It’s a great way to follow the highs and lows so that you remain safe on the beach and can also take advantage of those very special minus tide days like today. Enjoy my pics! #iluvtowalk #trinidadcalifornia #humboldtcounty #humboldt #invertebrates #pisaster #seastars
