My brother-in-law and sister-in-law are visiting so we are maximizing the use of our local recreational opportunities. Unfortunately my blogging time the past few weeks has been limited. How I wish there were more than 24 hrs in a day!
Two days ago we hiked one of the trails I have anxiously wanted to explore, in the Redwood National and State Parks, the Ossagon Trail. The trailhead is at the northern end of the Newton Drury Parkway across the street from the Hope Creek trailhead that I blogged about in my June 28 post. This approximately 5 mile RT trail thru the redwood and lower elevation mixed forests gets the hiker to a beautiful, expansive beach. Hikers and mountain bike riders are allowed. The trail is not for the faint at heart; Prairie Creek State Parks report that the elevation gain is 1200 ft. My Apple Watch logged a 900 ft gain. Either way, hiker beware, the return hike is a vigorous one. A great workout that will definitely get your heart pumping on the gradual, steep, one hour and ten minute climb back to the trailhead. If your up for it, I totally recommend it. Pack a lunch, bring water, a blanket and a sun hat to enjoy a lovely and fairly isolated beach break. (We saw three other people on the beach.)
There are some great photo ops on this somewhat seasonal trail. Word to the wise: access can be limited during the rainy season, unless you don’t mind wading thru water and wetland terrain. Enjoy my pics! #iluvtowalk #redwoodnationalandstatepark #ossagontrail #hiking #redwoods
