Today’s Kayak: Trinidad Bay

It’s been a gorgeous Labor Day weekend in Trinidad, CA. Inspired by visiting family members, today was my maiden voyage kayaking on Trinidad Bay. I usually kayak on Big Lagoon and Maple Creek where I have become very comfortable. At Big Lagoon, you could easily walk back to the launch if you needed to and because it’s a freshwater lagoon there is no tidal surge when you get in and out of your boat.

We had outstanding weather and a very mellow paddle on a calm bay; I would equate it with a Sunday drive. The harbor seals were out in full force swimming in the kelp beds and hauled out on the smaller rocks. The highlight of today’s trip (for me) happened while I was bird watching. A harbor seal swam under and around my boat, looking up at me from underwater. Although it didn’t photograph well, it was pretty cool! Harbor seals are my favorite marine mammal.

Enjoy my pics! The cover photo was taken by Michelle Tissot; raised paddle and me in kelp bed images by Craig Tissot. The distance shot was taken by my husband from the bluff above on Edwards Street. #iluvtokayak #trinidadcalifornia #humboldtcounty #humboldt
