By watching the weather forecast one could have easily planned to get out early this morning or wait to walk in the early afternoon between the storm squalls. Not the case with me; I did keep an eye on the forecast but purposely slept in. Because I prefer to walk in the morning, Baxter and I suit up in our rain gear and go for it. We walked passed some of the regulars who were completing theirs and heading home for shelter. The end result being that we had little company this morning which is fine by me. Baxter remained mellow without the additional distractions like leash pulling and growling at other dogs. JRT’s are tough little dogs who fiercely protect their people; my left arm and wrist were grateful.
Our walk began with a drizzle and morphed into a squall with sideways rain, and 20 MPH winds. Not too bad but enough to saturate rain gear and trail shoes. The worst section of our route is the sea level “gulch” if you will, that includes the Trinidad State Beach parking lot, Seascape Restaurant and the base of Trinidad Head. The wind funnels through that area blasting everything in its path. It’s the most brutal part of the route.
Baxter and I followed what I’m guessing was a Dad carrying a baby in a backpack with a toddler in tow. They were outfitted in rain gear. Determined guy with easy going kiddos. I’m guessing he gambled on the weather looking for an opportunity to get out of the house. As we began our climb up the headland, I saw the family stop and turn around at the first bench as the rain intensified. Some walk is better than no walk…
My gut tells me this year’s fall/winter season may be a wet one. Along with a warming trend comes moisture. To me, the worst part of walking in the rain is getting my feet wet. Taking the initiative, and with the proper resources, a problem easily solved. Note to self: break out and use those Gore-Tex gaiters you own to help keep your shoes dry.
