Today’s Walk: Why We Take Walks

I’ve been spending a lot of time this past week sitting and listening rather than getting out and moving. Civic duty called and the schedule has not been conducive to morning walks so Baxter and I have been out of our normal routine. (Hence the Sunday walk in the storm.) My body has let me know it’s unhappy. I’m stiff, achy, crabby and feel like I’ve shrunk an inch. Baxter is also clearly anxious to get back out on the trail.

This morning court was delayed by an hour so I got up extra early to fit in a walk before heading back to the courtroom. Walking in the wee morning hours yields great rewards. It’s quiet and peaceful as well as energizing. Baxter and I had the trail to ourselves. The experience made us both happy. One of the biggest perks is that the endorphins released from exercise far exceed any other mood altering treatments sold and, it doesn’t come with unwanted side effects. I’m just saying…..
