Today’s Walk: Storm Debris and Rushing Water

My friend Sara and I opted to walk one of my favorite trails in Redwood National and State Parks, the Trillium Falls trail. The trail is accessed from Davidson Road off HWY 101 just north of Orick, CA. There are restrooms and picnic tables in the parking lot.

This morning we were on a quest seeking mushrooms and fungi but that goal was largely overshadowed by the huge amount of debris we found littering the trail and forest nearby. The recent storm had reeked havoc, falling and splintering trees everywhere. Fortunately a maintenance crew had been dispatched to clear the trail so hiking is still a viable option.

The upside of the heavy rain storm is that Trillium Falls is now flowing rapidly and the stream bed nearby is no longer dry. It’s not Multnomah Falls but beautiful in its own right. The fallen leaves are gorgeous. Roosevelt elk were napping in the meadow nearby but I couldn’t get close enough to take a decent pic. During our walk, we passed only a handful of people and saw even less later while eating lunch on the beach. One definitely gets spoiled in Humboldt!
