Baxter and I took our usual spin down to and around Trinidad Head this morning. Due to today’s fog this post is limited in number of usual gorgeous ocean images. However, the BIG news of the day is that Dungeness Crab season is a go on our part of the coastline. Domoic acid is not creating a problem this year and the whales are not hanging out close to shore like they currently are to the south of us in Monterey. Our fisher men/woman can pull their pots Dec 1. Whoohoo! Guess what we will be having for dinner?
Fishing is a tough occupation. Tested by the power of the sea and braving wind and high surf is not for the faint of heart. Fisher men/women work hard to bring seafood such as the very tasty Dungeness crab to the consumer’s table. Unless your a sport fisherman/woman pulling in your own catch, buying crab from a commercial fisher person is a special treat. A very delicious luxury that helps stimulate the local economy. Purchases that in turn help put food on the fishing families tables. Each year a negotiation occurs that sets the wholesale price on crab. There is a “middleman” involved. Most likely competition from retailers up and down the coast will drive the price up at the markets this year.
I find beauty in fishing gear such as crab pots. Each set of pots is unique to its particular boat and can be quite colorful. Yes, I have a fascination with industrial tools. 😉 In today’s post, I’m including images I have taken during several recent walks as I waited patiently for my favorite seafood season to start.
