We are having glorious weather on the Northcoast this week. Maybe that will bode well for the fishermen/women who are braving the high seas to bring in fresh Dungeness Crab. Today is the first day they can legally pull their pots and Trinidad Pier was full of activity as the distribution trucks began to load up. A large portion of the catch will be sold to foreign outlets but an ample supply should remain for sale in local markets. We have already stocked up on lemon and butter in anticipation of some feasting at our house.
While I walked the headland I also thought about an experience I had the day before. An artist friend of mine had shared on Instagram a poster she created for an art exhibit on women in the cannabis industry. I am a neutral party when it comes to Mary Jane. I tried it in the 70’s. Yes, I inhaled. 😉 But it really didn’t do it for me; it made me paranoid and anxious which I didn’t like. My vice of choice is a good bottle of Chardonnay. The exhibit poster however peaked my interest so I went to check it out. I now have a new appreciation for the industry.
I love art and women’s history so I suspected I’d like the show. There are 30 different women featured in the paintings by local artists. All the women in the exhibit share a business interest, each owns and runs a cannabis farm. A different spin than the usual portrait show. Most of the art did a great job of bringing forward the personalities of the women. It’s a fun show; I’ve included the exhibit poster and eight of the portraits in this post. What I hadn’t considered was the venue which I was unfamiliar with. I sought out the address, 427 H. St. which is a business called Herb & Market Humboldt, the on the corner of H and Samoa in Arcata, CA.
Maybe I’m late to the party, but yesterday, was my first ever visit to a pot shop. The exhibit poster got me in the door and while I was there I looked around and talked with the staff, primarily a woman named Wendy. I learned a lot! I was impressed with how knowledgeable and patient Wendy was and the huge array of value added products they carry. The various components of the different strains of cannabis are made into a full range of products from various edibles to skincare to Epsom salt soaks for athletes. It’s pretty impressive. I bought a bag of the Epsom salts to try it for myself. All the walking I do occasionally does weary these bones of mine. 😉 Enjoy my pics! #iluvtowalk #baxteronthego #trinidadcalifornia #humboldtcounty #humboldt #womenincannabis
