Today’s Walk: The Arcata Community Forest

I highly recommend taking a Sunday stroll, especially amongst some tall trees. My friend Sara and I hiked the Arcata Community Forest this past Sunday. Our 4.6 mile walk flew by quickly and easily. This was the first time I had been in this forest and taken this hike.

The Arcata Community Forest is a unique community resource located adjacent to and within the City of Arcata, CA. There are several entrances to the forest. We parked at the California Street entrance and followed trail no. 10. Our total elevation gain was approximately 650 feet. It’s a beautiful site with multiple trail options, a beautiful redwood forest with a meandering stream.

As stated on the City of Arcata’s website:

The Arcata Community Forest, established in 1955, is comprised of 2,350 acres of second growth redwood forest in Humboldt County, California. Community Forests are relatively rare in the western United States, but recently there has been an increasing interest and effort to establish community forests. Timber harvest revenue funds forest operations, habitat restoration and management of the forest for recreational uses. A combination of working forest areas, special management areas and ecological reserves create a balanced management approach. Community forestry in Arcata is designed to provide local residents the opportunity and responsibility to manage their natural resources.

It only took me 7 years to take this hike. I’m glad I finally did. The trails are set up for multi-use; we observed other hikers on foot, bicyclists and people on horseback. Enjoy my pics! #iluvtowalk #arcatacalifornia #arcatacommunityforest #redwoods #humboldt #humboldtcounty
