Got a big change in scenery when I went to visit my son in Nevada. He took me to the Bureau of Land Management’s Red Rock Canyon, an area that encompasses 195,819 acres within the Mojave Desert and is located 19 miles outside of Las Vegas. It’s a great time to visit this part of the country since it’s early spring; temperatures range from high 50’s to 73 degrees. Very comfortable and perfect weather for a hike.
Please note: this site requires a reservation and is a popular one so trail head parking can be a challenge. You might want to go early. We had an 11 am reservation and hiked our third option because we could not park at choices 1 & 2. Unless you start on foot from the Visitor Center, a one way scenic loop drive is how you access the trail heads. Once the lots are full, you must move on to the next available one as parking on the shoulder is prohibited. Gates are open 8-5.
For more pre-visit information, check out their website, redrockcanyonlv.org. The site has lots of great information including flora and fauna. Word to the wise, bring water, food, hat, sunscreen and wear ankle high hiking boots. I wore trail shoes but wished I’d worn my boots; the trail and road surfaces included a lot of heavy rock. Enjoy my pics! #iluvtowalk #nevada #redrocks
