After years of resetting myself with daily walks on the beach and local headlands, I realized just how stressed and buried I was by my professional life. For 32 years I worked in the museum profession, 19 of which I was as an Executive Director. Don’t get me wrong, I loved my profession and am proud of the many ways we made a difference in people’s lives. But maybe at times I took myself too seriously. Being Type A and worrying about every detail and whether or not I was going to make payroll takes its toll. So here I am today, very fortunate to live on one of the most stunning pieces of California Coastline. Our backyard is a National Monument with beautiful beaches and two headlands right out our front door. Our location is somewhat isolated which is one of its many charms. I believe in Guardian Angels and that things happen for a reason. Maybe that’s why life led us to living “behind the Redwood Curtain.” One of my favorite things to do is to take walks or hike in the forest and on beaches. Thru this blog I hope to be able to share some of the beauty I’m fortunate to experience. My posts will include glimpses of my daily walks and other travel experiences focusing on my perspective of the landscape before me. I hope I can bring joy to all who view my posts.

Today’s Walk: Hope Creek and Ten Taypo Trail

On June 28, 2021June 28, 2021 By Susan TissotIn WalksLeave a comment

To my dog Baxter’s dismay he was left at home today while my friend Sara and I ventured into the north end of Redwood National and State Parks to hike the Hope Creek and Ten Taypo Trail loop. The park was buzzing with tourists and campers but for some reason this trail seems to be …

Today’s Walk: They’re Here

On June 25, 2021June 25, 2021 By Susan TissotIn WalksLeave a comment

Coming back up the hill after our walk on the headland, I casually looked around and saw the following license plates: Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California, Texas, Virginia, New York. There is no doubt that the summer tourism season has begun. For better or worse, they’re here…. We live in a sleepy little hamlet (technically a …

Today’s Walk: San Francisco Wake up Call

On June 23, 2021June 24, 2021 By Susan TissotIn art, WalksLeave a comment

I’m back in the city for a few days so I spent four hours on foot today walking Crissy Field, the Palace of Fine Arts, and Alamo Park to see the infamous Painted Ladies and fnnch’s latest curation of a multi-artist, pro-vaccination street exhibit. (I walked a good 6+ miles but took an Uber up …

Today’s Walk: We’ve Got a Visitor

On June 18, 2021June 18, 2021 By Susan TissotIn WalksLeave a comment

Baxter and I had another quiet walk (and return home) on Trinidad Head this morning followed by a little time on Launcher Beach. We encountered only one person at the start and two at the end of our headland walk. Yes, we are spoiled and loving it! Very grateful for the opportunity. Today also brought …

Today’s Walk: Why Leash Laws Make Sense

On June 17, 2021June 17, 2021 By Susan TissotIn WalksLeave a comment

Baxter and I had a really nice mellow walk this morning. Overcast skies seem to slow people down in the morning; we walked in isolation most of the way. Maybe this was payback for the awful experience we had two days previous. Two days ago Baxter and I took our usual route around the headland …

Today’s Kayak: Forming New Habits

On June 15, 2021June 15, 2021 By Susan TissotIn kayakingLeave a comment

Up and out the door early this morning and on the water by 8 am. A 2.25 hour paddle with a friend followed by a brown bag lunch on the beach. This is a habit I could get used to. New goal: kayak at least once a week. So far in the past two weeks …

Today’s Walk/Kayak: Off to a Good Start

On June 10, 2021June 10, 2021 By Susan TissotIn kayaking, WalksLeave a comment

If the last few weeks are any indication of how our summer will go, we maybe in for a nice one. That is, as long as the fire season is kept to a minimum. The scary part is that there are a lot of brown landscapes just to the south of us already. Summer has …

Today’s Walk: the Unpredictable Coast

On June 5, 2021June 5, 2021 By Susan TissotIn WalksLeave a comment

Summer is on the horizon. The last two days of fickle weather have illustrated an important point; if your planning a trip to the coast make sure you dress in layers. When the temperature is what inlanders perceive as chilly, if there’s no wind and it’s sunny, 50 degrees can be warm T-shirt weather. If …

Today’s Walk: The Impacts of Health Insurance

On June 2, 2021June 2, 2021 By Susan TissotIn Walks2 Comments

I spent almost three hours this morning walking my favorite urban National Park Service (NPS) site, Crissy Field. While my husband spent the day at follow up appointments at UCSF’s Medical Center, I walked the site, people watched and took some pics. My idea of an awesome morning (for me, not my husband). As I …

Today’s Walk: When Life Gives You Lemons

On May 29, 2021May 29, 2021 By Susan TissotIn WalksLeave a comment

All of us experience the ups and downs of loss. It’s just a fact of life. Doesn’t make it any easier but, it’s part of the deal. How you come out of the fog associated with that loss is up to you. Relationships are exhausting. In order for them to be good ones, you have …
