Today’s Walk: Love From our Fur Babies

April 2, 2020

My husband and I are both animal lovers. They have always been a part of our lives. From the time we were children thru adulthood, our fur babies played an important role giving us many cherished memories. As parents we raised our own kids with a menagerie of animals that included dogs, cats, horses, chickens and fish. All were a beloved part of our family. When we became empty nesters we intentionally downsized our lives which decreased the square footage of our home and property AND downsized our animal load to just one small dog, a Jack Russell Terrier named Baxter.

Baxter is technically my husband’s dog. If Baxter had to choose, I have no doubt who he’d side with (my husband). That said, I am the one who walks Baxter. He is my very enthusiastic walking buddy. He is very smart and cues into my behavior and the athletic clothing I wear. Once I start to slip on my walking shoes, he is by my side, anxiously waiting for me to put on his harness so he can accompany me. He’s a very sweet and loving dog who takes his job very seriously once the leash is attached. On the road or trail he makes it very clear that he is along to sniff and mark territory but also to protect his Mama. When another dog is in sight Baxter does what I call his “Tasmanian Devil” routine. He spins in circles and pulls on the leash while barking at the perceived threat. This behavior annoys people who don’t have experience with terriers or other high energy dogs. Other terrier owners, smile and nod with understanding as they pass by. Baxter is a character, very cute and full of energy and personality. He brings us a lot of joy even with his Tasmanian Devil behavior.

A friend of mine lost her special fur baby, a 12+ year old chocolate lab named Tilly just yesterday. Tilly meant everything to her. My heart goes out to her. Like Baxter, Tilly loved taking walks with her Mama and provided that special companionship that all animal lovers know and love. Tilly is a reminder to not take our fur babies for granted. We don’t know how much time we will have with them. Each day is a gift. I hope everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the special bond that animals of all kind bring to the relationship. Seize the day and take your buddy for a walk whenever you can. They will love you for it and you’ll benefit from the exercise and joy they bring. #iluvtowalk #walkingmakesmehappy #baxteronthego #jackrussellterrier #jrt

Baxter is truly entertaining and it is obvious he takes his job as protector very seriously. He is so smart and truly enjoys the scenery on the walks almost as much as you do. I have had animals my whole life as well, they enrich our lives so much.
