Finding Joy in my own Backyard

Saturday April 4, 2020

Sometimes you just need a break. An opportunity to reset your mind and take it down a notch. For me, if it’s not taking a walk or beach combing then it’s spending some time chilling out in our backyard. (This is learned behavior BTW, read on).

We are very fortunate to have a roughly 1/4 acre lot which is mostly in our backyard. We have lots of perennials, some native plants and a few beautiful mature trees. With Spring having launched itself it is a beautiful place to sit a spell and contemplate the world or just enjoy a good glass of wine and listen to the hummingbirds. Even if the evening requires a blanket and heavy sweatshirt.

I tend to be one of those types who is always doing something. Keeping busy. My work and leisure ethic was instilled in me by my father. I was raised by a very mellow easy going mother and a very intensely active father. As kids we used to say, “Daddy has ants in his pants.” Our father rarely sat down. He always had lots of projects. His daughters learned this well and follow in his footsteps by being very passionate about a lot of things. Idle behavior was not in the vocabulary. In many ways this is an admirable trait. The downside is that one doesn’t know how to relax. So yes, I’ve had to work hard at getting to this point in my life. Getting to where I can “stop and smell the roses” if you will. Of course wine helps immensely! Here are a few images of the backyard garden I enjoy.
