Divide and Conquer

Saturday April 25, 2020

If you are a gardener like me this is such an exciting time. It is time to get outside to divide and conquer those garden beds! As our edible and ornamental plants wake from their winter slumber they compete for light and nutrients with the undesirables that have moved in. Yep, I’m talking about WEEDS!

It’s amazing how quickly plants can move in and literally take over. Today I invested my energy into doing some “house cleaning.” I’m not a big fan of dusting off the tchotchkes inside our house. Not my favorite thing. But when it’s time to get out and clean those garden beds, I muster up a lot of enthusiasm. I love to dig in the dirt. So much so that I can get carried away. I lose track of time when I’m outside. I also relax which is a skill I’m working hard to develop. Truth be told, my husband once caught me finishing up a garden bed by automobile headlights. I also once planted 192 dahlia tubers because they were gifted to me by a neighbor. Yes, gardening is a form of healthy addiction.

I’m grateful that we have a yard I can call my playground. I realize how fortunate we are. Especially during the mandatory shelter-in-place due to Covid-19. Gardening is a great way to release stress. My maternal grandmother taught me that. My father reinforced it while we grew up. It brings me great joy and something to look forward to. Cheers to a season of beautiful blooms and fresh artichokes! #iluvtogarden #digginginthedirt

For the second year in a row the deer moved in and ate the tops of the Tulips off. Next year they (the tulips) will be in planters on our deck. I, like you like getting into the dirt and planting. ( don’t tell Sandie I said that. ) Thanks for the post.

When Gene & Millie moved to the Auburn area they put big $$ into landscaping. The deer came thru immediately and wiped them out! They had to do a second planting using plants like rosemary and forgo a lot of Millie’s favorites. I remember that Millie was so frustrated. 😬
