Today’s Kayak: a Birders Paradise

To our dog Baxter’s dismay, today was a kayaking trip instead of a walking day. My friend Katrina and I headed to Big Lagoon and paddled up Maple Creek. We launched in the fog at 8:15 and paddled for 2 hrs and 15 min. True to fair weather nature, there were very few people out when we started (yay!). No other paddlers present but about a 1/2 dozen swimmers. Kayak Trinidad’s rental business and other kayakers were launching as we finished our paddle and exited the lagoon.

What a day for bird watching! We saw an Osprey nesting pair, a young Bald Eagle with his half eaten lunch (trout?), a Cooper’s Hawk, 4-5 Herons, 3 Snowy Egrets, a number of small birds, and fish jumping. When we returned to the boat launch the river otter family of five was hanging out in the water nearby.

Today’s Kayak trip ended with lunch on the beach where we observed a dolphin pair swimming close to shore, one California Sea Lion and a number of agate hunters. Enjoy the pics!
