Today’s Walk: Control Issues & Stress Management

I have never forgotten hearing the phrase, “going to hell in a hand basket.” It’s a strong phrase older adults used in the 1960’s & 70’s to describe events at that time (Vietnam War, Watergate, protests and public displays of counter culture behavior). What I think it really described and reflected was frustration about things one can not directly control.

Another phrase I remember is, “it seems like the world is spiraling out of control.” The key word here is control. To the dismay of many there are quite a few things in life that are outside of our control. I’m by no means suggesting that we all drop out and become passive. However, I’ve come to the conclusion that control issues are a catalyst for self induced stress and angst that can result in an internal struggle that impacts your health. I’m just saying…

Today I offer one solution: rise before the sun and take a walk. It doesn’t have to be a marathon effort. Stroll around the block if time is an issue but go to a vantage point to watch the sunrise. THAT action is within your control. Having my daughter Allie home for a visit has been good for me. She is a graduate student who is learning the art of juggling and handling the stress that accompanies adulthood. She has been pushing me to roll out of bed earlier and reap the benefits. She is wise beyond her years. The quiet before the daily noise begins and the awesome display of energy brought on by the sunrise is so worth it.

Enjoy the pics. I’d enjoy seeing pics from your walk(s) shared in the comment section of my posts. #iluvtowalk #baxteronthego #trinidadcalifornia #humboldt #humboldtcounty
