Today’s Walk: Living in the Shadow of Covid

Our dog Baxter sat on the sidelines yesterday as I walked alone on Trinidad State Beach. Needing some time to think, I also wanted to check on the nearby embankment that Fetid Adders Tongue lives on. Nope. Too early, but I’ll keep checking for the emergence of the 2022 blooms. Yes, I am enamored by these tiny orchid like native plants. They show their spectacular blooms for just a short time so due diligence is required. Check last year’s blog post to see images of these tiny but robust beauties.

As I walked the beach the pandemic weighed heavy on my mind. Apparently the Omicron variant is currently testing at a positivity rate of 23% (of those tested) in Humboldt County. When I began my walk I discovered that a Covid testing site was being hosted inside the Town Hall. Most recently these tests had been done, outside, in the parking lot adjacent to Trinidad Head. I’m not sure where the testers were coming from, but, there was a steady stream of cars pulling up to the site, parking, with their drivers then walking into the Town Hall. What’s so strange about this is that the Town Hall is located directly across the street of Trinidad’s Elementary School. I’m baffled by the positioning of the testing site. School is in session (face to face) with K-6 students. What the heck?

Oddly enough, many of the testers seemed to also be walking around town, getting a bite to eat at the local restaurants and/or checking out the offerings inside the Trinidad Art Gallery. Unless I’m wrong, this is all before their test results are known. Test or no test, if you suspect your sick and/or your not feeling well, please opt to go home. Again, what the heck?

After witnessing the commotion on the street I made a conscious choice to re-route myself down another street to the trailhead. We all want the pandemic to be over but where’s the common sense? Arghhhh.

The upside is that it we are having beautiful weather this week. It is a great time to take a socially distanced walk. Enjoy my pics and please be safe and mindful of others when you are out and about. #iluvtowalk #covid19 #pandemic #trinidadstatebeach #fetidadderstongue #humboldtcounty #humboldt

This title really caught my attention. It captures what I am experiencing too. In the beginning COVID was just on the news, but as it gets closer and closer it casts a large shadow. People I know have it, I’ve lost people I love to it. Your picture shows there is life outside the shadow and I hope the whole world finds that soon! Be safe.
