Today’s Walk: Resiliency

April 3, 2020

During our walk this morning it occurred to me just how amazing native plants are. They fit the very definition of resiliency. Each year they bounce back after their winter slumber and if we humans pay attention we can watch them come back to life with a spectacular show of blooms.

I’m a big fan of trilliums. They appear in the PNW forested areas as if almost sneaking into place with delicate, beautiful spring blooms. On the headlands where I walk we are fortunate to have white, pink and dark purple varieties. (Although, I personally have not seen the dark purple ones, yet, but I am hopeful.) For weeks I had been looking along the trails for the spring blooms. To me they really are indicative that Spring has sprung! Every year I anticipate their arrival and am thrilled to see them return. A few weeks ago I saw my first bloom of the season. Since then it’s almost as if they have new arrivals daily.

Just for fun I’ve decided to document one as it goes thru the blooming process. I take daily photos and will combine them all in one post after the bloom exposes itself. So stay tuned but for now enjoy the pics of the ones I’ve seen so far.

On a bigger scale why am I thinking about resiliency? Because like native plants we humans are resilient. Right now we are being challenged on a number of levels. I have been so impressed with how people around the globe (thank you social media) have come together to share stories, history, science, art and music, to remind people they are not alone. Museums have created virtual exhibits and are sharing cool information about what is special in their collections. They are also creating and sharing curriculum for parents who now find themselves homeschooling their own children. I believe with all my heart that there is some good that will come out of this. We WILL bounce back from this unusual time we are currently in. Need a mood lifter, consider taking a walk. #iluvtowalk #walkingmakesmehappy #baxteronthego #jackrussellterrier #jrt #native plants #trilliums
